Hasta La Vista Wood Paneling!

I am in love with our new bedroom and I am so happy to say 'so long!' to the dark, orange-y, wood paneled walls. It is with open arms that I welcome our fresh, bright, clean and cottage-y new walls!  It is amazing the difference a can of paint can make. I've said that before I am sure!  Here is the room in all its dark and  moody (not the mysterious, cool kind of moody, but the grungy and grumpy kind) un-glory...

After priming the wood paneling, painting the trim and giving the whole room two coats of  'Creamy White' by Behr, the room looks like this...

It really feels SO much better now! It has a lovely light feeling and the painted, wood paneled wall adds so much character to the room. Even though it was so annoying to paint, I'm so glad we have it! Everything else in the room we already had, so all this change cost us was the cost of the paint. Not bad! We still may add some more art and we have yet to hang the mirror above our dresser, but for now we've got a few things up including these adorable pictures of our son...

The drapes and woven blinds we had previously so up they went and for a curtain rod we just used one left behind by the previous owners. It used to be white and didn't look so great, but I used some leftover black spray paint on it and now it doesn't look too bad! Look at the pretty view we get out our window (you can't tell in the picture but you can also see the amazing mountains)...

Here's one last before and after...
And so with that I shall leave you with a sneak peek of some red trim...

Exciting! We just have to let our cupboards harden for a few more days before we put them up and then our kitchen will be done for now. I can't wait to see it put together! Alright, it's off the library with us. I think our little guy is so bored of being inside while we do work around the house. I think we'll all enjoy this outing!

Red Trim

Well, we're continuing the work on our new home and things are coming along- slowly, but surely. Our big project right now is the kitchen. We've been painting the cabinets and the walls and later today we'll be working on a light fixture. The colour scheme throughout the main floor of the house is inspired by this photo...
(Found here)
So in the kitchen the walls are being painted a soft, warm grey called 'Gull' by Martha Stewart, the cabinets are being painted a cream called 'Creamy White' by Behr and I have a red called 'Maine Lobster' also by Martha that I would like to incorporate into the room in some way.

(from L-R: Creamy White, Maine Lobster, Gull)
In the kitchen there is a built-in shelf that is currently wood stained in an orange-ish tone that is not so pretty. It isn't too bad and I may leave it as is, but I'm also considering painting the built-in the red colour. I've also seen this picture on Pinterest (which I think may have originally come from here) and I really liked the idea!

Isn't that a fun pop of colour? Anyway, we decided to try out painting the trim around our kitchen window, so we will see if we like it or not. One coat is being done as we speak and I'm not sure yet. It definitely stands out! I think we will wait until everything is done and put back into place before we make any decisions. I was pretty nervous before we did it, but then I reminded myself that you have to take risks and it isn't permanent. If we really don't like it, we can always change it back!

Anyway, I have to get back to doing a second coat on the kitchen walls. I can't wait to show you some semi-finished rooms! What are your thoughts on the red trim and the built-in shelf?

Camping Out

The last couple of nights we have been camping out in our living room as the master bedroom got painted. I still find sleeping in our living room to be kind of exciting. Like when you're a kid and you have a Christmas camp out, or a sleepover. Speaking of Christmas camp outs... my family tried this again several years ago before there were any kiddies in the family. We thought it would be so fun and nostalgic. Unfortunately, it was not. Later it was to receive the name 'The Christmas Camp Out from Hell'. I don't think anyone even fell asleep due to rustling sleeping bags, uncomfortable sleeping surfaces and one super loud clock. If anyone had been able to sleep, I don't think it would have lasted because there are several snorers in our group. Needless to say, it was not the delightful, whimsical event that we had hoped for.

Anyway, back to the master bedroom. It actually has been  fun sleeping in our living room the past couple of nights likely because we have our mattress with us and there are no overly loud clocks. However, we will hopefully be back in our room tonight as we will be getting our room set up today! We still have unpacking to do, but I thought it would feel really good to have one room completely done. Well, as done as it will be for a bit. This room was also one of the most irritating to paint because we painted a wood paneled wall and that meant getting in between all the little cracks plus priming it first. We also had to give all the walls a really good clean before hand because they were so, so dirty. We have a wood stove in our basement and I think that is what made our room so bad. I had to go over the walls a couple of times and was constantly changing my water!

Here is a quick picture of the wood paneled wall in our bedroom. This was just after we had moved in, hence the drawers everywhere.

As you can imagine, the paint makes the room look so much better. I don't know if you can tell in this photo, but if you look at the wall by the window there are some darker lines on the wall... that is all dirt. I can't wait to put the room together. Hopefully I'll have a picture for you sometime in the next couple of days. My parents are arriving today to help us with some painting work and I hope we can get a good chunk done. I'm so grateful to have their help!

On that note, I need to get going on some things. I'll leave you with a picture of the little guy camping out in our living room...

**I took a quick picture with my phone to show you the paint job...

Changes

There have been some major changes in our little household since I last posted here! Though, I suppose that would be expected seeing as how my last update was nearly a century ago. I don't even know where to begin... well I do. How could I not begin with this little guy...

Our sweet Parker is now 7 months old and I find myself asking how that much time could have possibly passed since his birth! He's such a funny boy and he's doing so many new things. We are head over heels in love with our little man!

Next up on my list of updates would be our housing situation. We have moved. Again. However, this time it is more permanent. In the spring we found out that my husband would not be returning to his teaching job in Comox. Immediately we started looking for jobs around BC and even Alberta. Because he teaches music, there aren't necessarily as many job opportunities. After applying to a few options, Patrick was offered a job in a small town in the interior of BC called Nakusp and he accepted. Naturally, we were sad to be leaving the beautiful  Island, especially since we have so many good friends there now, but we were also excited to start a new adventure and Naksup is equally beautiful! We are surrounded by mountains and there is a lovely lake and I'm really looking forward to the weather here. We get real seasons... Yay!! I am so excited for snow!!!

What is even more exciting is that we were able to buy a house! We moved in just three days ago on the 10th and we are in the midst of unpacking. Whew! I tell ya, I am so happy we had help with our move. Moving with a baby is not the easiest thing ever. I don't know what we would have done if we had been on our own. Thankfully, the worst is over with and now we get to enjoy setting up our first house! There is a lot of work that we would like to do, so hopefully I will have a lot of projects to blog about... if I can get my act together! Our initial plans for our home are all painting. The bigger changes will come later once we can save up for them. Anyway, let me show you our new house...

I should be back within a few days to show you a little before tour of our home and before long we'll be getting some painting done. I can't wait to see the difference the paint will make!

I hope you are all enjoying your summer! As you can imagine, ours has been a little crazy, but good. We're going to head to the beach for a swim this evening to try and soak in the last few weeks of summer holidays before Patrick heads back to school. We haven't been in the lake here yet, so we'll see how cold it is! We probably should keep unpacking, but we can't resist!
